Site 13A

13A South

Site 13A is presently infilled by a large sandy dune. In two places cemented MSA deposits (LC-MSA) adhere to the cave walls and are visible above the present dune. In 2000, a test excavation was conducted near the center of the site. Middle Stone Age occupation was evident as multiple thin lenses, including hearths, and included both fauna and lithic artifacts.

Detailed results from the test excavations are described in: Marean, C. et al. (2004). "Paleoanthropological investigations of Middle Stone Age sites at Pinnacle Point, Mossel Bay (South Africa): Archaeology and hominid remains from the 2000 field season." PaleoAnthropology 5(2): 14-83.
