Other Geological Localities

These are localities that we have identified as foci for geological description, sampling, and dating that retain important paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic evidence. At Danabaai there are sections that preserve multiple facies of the Klein Brak, Waenhuiskrans, and Strandveld Formations (Stratotype C of (133)). At the mouth of the Great Brak River is a long ~ 20 m undescribed section exposing multiple facies of the Klein Brak, Waenhuiskrans, and Strandveld Formations. At the mouth of the Little Brak is a ~ 6 m section of multiple facies of the Klein Brak and Waenhuiskrans Formations. At the mouth of the Swartvlei River at Sedgefield is a ~30 m section exposing multiple facies of the Klein Brak, Waenhuiskrans, and Strandveld Formations. At both Great Brak and Sedgefield there are several raised beaches preserved in these sections that likely represent high sea levels during MIS5. These sections are being drawn and sampled (using a gas-powered coring device), with the drawing and samples tied to true coordinates through the use of a differential GPS or total station. We are devoting a large series of OSL dates to these sequences so that we can precisely age the changing contexts recorded in the sections.
